How to select a helmet for auto racing
Safety is the most important thing when it comes to auto racing. Technological advancement has given new dimension to the safety equipments. The helmets that were used years back looked like a football and had a thin lining from within which provided no protection in case of serious accidents. Safety has become an important aspect after that. The helmets used today are different. They are able to provide complete protection in case of high speed and high impact accidents. At the same time they are comfortable to the drivers as well. Each driver has its own choice and preference to choose the helmet. Every driver has a different criterion that he keeps in mind while selecting the helmet.
The car racing drivers first of all look at how safe and how comfortable the helmet is. The helmets are also rated. The M-rated helmets can be used for motorcycle racing whereas the SA-rated helmets have a divers use and can be used for any king of racing. The rating standards are more difficult for the SA-rated helmets which are mandatory to match. They have to undergo a number of tests like flammability and impact test before they are approved by the associated authority.
One should always prefer full face helmets over the open face helmets as they provide more protection to the entire face. The open face helmets might be comfortable than the full face one but the protection is negligible as compared to the other. The helmets are made out of a number of materials, each of which varies in the amount of impact they can handle in case of a crash. The cheapest of all are the ones made of fiber glass. The helmets made out of carbon fiber might fall a little expensive but provide much better protection and are the best to choose. They are even more durable.
You need a different helmet in case you use a head and neck restraint. The helmet has holes in it to which you can easily attach the device. Helmets come designed for it but in case there are no holes the retailers get the holes drilled to the helmet you choose. But it always advisable to choose the helmets that are pre-designed for the purpose. Make sure the helmet has lot of vents for easy circulation of air. Presence of removal linings help in easy maintenance. You can keep yourself updated about new advancements and other auto racing news by reading some sports magazines or over the net.
